I fundamentally believe that companies like ours can play a significant role in tackling some of the major challenges of our time, such as climate change, if we bring the power of our purpose to bear.
For me this is personal, and it really matters. I remember as a teenager in Bulgaria volunteering for the YMCA – a major NGO that works to support the development of younger, underprivileged young people – working to improve the conditions and life chances of Bulgaria’s poorest people. I realised then that we all had a chance to make a positive impact on people’s lives.
I wanted to talk to you about how now as Sirius’ first ever Impact Officer, we plan to achieve impact by delivering focused and sustainable change. And I want to make clear that anyone can achieve impact too. I’d urge everyone reading this to “focus on the impact you have versus the title you have.”
The challenges we face
In recent decades the world has become much richer and there has been significant progress in living standards, it has also left people and communities behind and many are concerned that the profit-motive is not enough to address existential challenges like climate change.
Yet we have seen through the COVID-19 pandemic how businesses can deliver incredible impact through living their purpose. Whether that’s technology companies offering free rides to vaccine sites, major manufacturers coming together to build ventilators, or the private sector developing a vaccine at an unprecedented speed. Large and small, the impact that businesses can have has never been clearer.
At Sirius we face some specific challenges that we must continue to meet, whether that’s reducing our emissions across our portfolio, fostering a genuinely diverse and inclusive environment, or giving back to the communities we operate in. In all of these areas we have made real progress but now is the time to accelerate the pace of change and make real impact.
My plan for impact
As Chief Impact Officer, I oversee the deployment of the Sirius ESG strategy. I’m looking into how we could potentially decarbonise our entire portfolio, this includes providing green electricity to our tenants and all our management offices, the roll-out of smart energy meters and electric vehicle charging points across the portfolio, and much more.
Our strategy of maintaining and refurbishing existing buildings already helps to minimise carbon emissions. By recycling existing properties, we conserve resources and minimise the use of materials and energy required to construct new properties. However, we are also aware that older buildings can be responsible for higher emissions and we will continue to look at how innovation can best be used to improve environmental efficiencies across our portfolio. I am also leading our work looking at how to incorporate ESG and sustainability considerations into our reporting, including aligning how we report with the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).
We’re spearheading real progress on social and governance factors, as Diversity and Inclusion ambassador at Sirius, I’ve taken charge of the rollout of our D&I roadmap. Earlier in 2021 we announced that we’d joined forces with LGBT Great, a membership organisation for corporates that helps develop diversity and inclusion in the workplace, and I’m working with the team there to make sure Sirius is as welcoming and inclusive as we can be.
I want to hear from you
Engagement with all of our stakeholders is a really important part of enabling positive impact at Sirius, so I am in regular contact with our investors, staff, tenants and other partners across the real estate industry to keep them up to speed on our plans and give everyone the opportunity to suggest how we might make impact. After all, I firmly believe that “the only limit to your impact is your imagination and commitment.”
If you’d like to talk in more detail to me about where we can make impact – big or small - don’t hesitate to drop me an email (esg@sirius-real-estate.com) or send me a message on LinkedIn. I’d love to chat.
